How do I dye really long hair?

I have really long hair, a couple inches past my butt. I have been dying my hair for a while now, but I just want to know if I actually do it right. I use 3 boxes of dye and it takes around 1 - 2 hours to put all the dye in my hair. I take sections of my hair at a time, starting at the front and I just put the dye in until I get it all over.

But I am worried that since it takes so long my hair will come out different than it should. I usually go dark brown, so it doesn't matter too much, but this time I am going to dye it a slightly lighter dark brown with some reddish tones. One time I dyed my hair dark auburn, and it came out a copper color that was really light. Does the peroxide in the dye just keep getting lighter, or does it only lighten a couple shades to a certain point.

Does it matter how long it takes to put the dye in my hair? How long should it take to get the right results?

I can't go to a salon either.

Thanks

Wow my hat off to you.

If you are going darker always start in the front. After you get it all on set your timer, then start on the back. When finished with the back set a timer. Iam sure you will get it all on in time. Make sure you part form ear to ear. When the first timer goes off wash only the front off, clip the back together and put your head in the bath tub and rinse. When the second timer goes off jump in the shower and give everything a good shampoo. If you are going lighter always start in the back same process.

If you are doing a all over color try to do the middle of the hair shaft first ( 1 to 2 inches away from roots and the same amount away from your ends)then your roots then your ends. This will help make the color even.

Developers generally work like this:

5 vol deposit only Generally 30 minutes

10 vol 1 shade lift then deposit

20 vol two shades lift

30 vol 3 shades

40 vol 4 shades Generally up to 45 minutes

Yes, all products say they will stop after a certain amount of time but it really depends on your hair. If your hair is really dry it could take color darker. It is a lot of work for one person to deal with. I would find a friend to help you out especially with the back.

Good Luck

Realizing that you're unable to go to a salon, with that many demands for coloring your hair, either do it as you've always done it to keep it simple, or don't do it at all.

Do you know a cosmetlogist friend who can do it for a discount or even for free at your house?

That's another suggestion.

Overall, I would nix the idea of coloring your own hair with it being that long and having so many demands. That's, in my opinion, asking for a lot of mistakes.

Best of luck to you.

I had hair about as long as you're describing yours to be. I dyed my hair burgundy and used about 2-3 bottles of hair dye, too, but my sister always dyed the hair for me and it never took very long. Maybe if you could get a friend to do it for you, the color wouldn't sit in your hair for as long.
