Going from long to very short hair: what should my first haircut be?

I've finally decided to cut my long hair short just to try something different. I'm just a little tired of long hair. I've decided to get at least one or maybe two different haircuts before I reach my desired goal, which would be a short crop like Jamie Lee Curtis.

My hair is half-way down my back right now. What is a good style to cut it into first?

Going from long to that short will be a shock, but if you do cut it into another hairstyle first, I really think you'll not get to the shorter length. If you want a shoulder-length bob, then cut it to your shoulders, but if you really want an ultra-short haircut, go to a barbershop where they really know how to cut hair short. Otherwise, you'll never get there, and you'll spend a lot of time wondering how it would have felt. Just cut it real short and get it over with. If you like it, then you can keep it short, but if you don't like it, then you can immediately start growing it out.

I've cut my hair short 3 times in my life (I'm 31) and have REGRETTED it every single time!!! Long hair is in. Get it layered for a different look or just have like 5 inches cut off to see how you like it, but DONT cut it off. Trust me.

Keep it mid length at first, then gradually go shorter. Keep it soft by having it layered, with front sides coming towards your face. It will take a while to get used to it but long hair tends to DRAG YOU DOWN.

My hair is long also, and I have cut it off short several times and have regreted it. It has finally grown down to the middle of my back. If you don't have layers you should try them. A medium curling iron rod works really good on long hair. It adds volume and looks really good instead of it being dull and flat down, which I like to. If you really want to get it cut, I would get it cut maybe a little bit below my shoulders with some layers in it....

I had the same type of hair. My hair had a slight wave to it, so, I was able to gradually progress to shorter hair. I would highly reccommend that you do this in stages over a period of months.

My hair was right above my butt, I cut it down to an inch above my shoulder into a "bob" cut. Three weeks later, I cut it again into a "chinese bob"--this is best for framing the face. Then finally I went to a "short crop".

I love it! Especially in this hot weather. But, take it from me, do this in stages that way you can adjust to the difference in the hair. Not only that you may notice that you like it at one particular stage and might not want to cut it all off.

i would go with a choppy hair cut that is just above your shoulders. the length will still make your hair versatile so you can throw it back in a pony tail or do a lot of different things with it. i love when people decide to make drastic changes with their hair :). have fun with it!

A lot of opinions here from a lot of people who definitely know what they like and what they don't. I think short hair (if done right)is absolutely hot on women, which is why I'll encourage it (i.e. no such thing as an unselfish good deed:)

HOWEVER and back to my point- nobody can tell you what is right for you, especially without seeing you. If you're in a metropolitan area, approach women with short hair you like, tell her that you like it and ask her a few questions, including, who did it? Make sure you do this because you want someone who is good at it. Do it with several women, you'll probaby make some friends as well. Then go see who cut it for a consultation/ ideas.

First of all the decsion is yours. Look if you want cut it. Cut it up to shoulder blade length then there after have them put a face frame now tell them you want it around nose and upper lip area Have them layer you as well. Depending on the thickness or thinness of your hair . Layers benefits both individuals. Layering for thinkness removes weight ( good for those who suffer w/ headaches %26amp; neck tension). Those w/ thin hair gives volume. I would do that for starts. DO NOT ASK FOR SHORT LAYERS!!! ASK FOR LONG LAYERS. Once length has been cut YOU SHOULD NOT loose anymore length!!!! There is no such thing as one or two layer!! Theres are layers!

I'd say, get a bob - but if you decide to do it in stages, go for about shoulder lenght and layer it so you still have some versatility and more options for styling. You'll still be able to pull it back, up whatever. Make sure you get some layering in the sides to frame the face, that always looks nice. I'd suggest looking at some hair style magazines so you can picture yourself with several possible hairstyles with that particular haircut (whichever you choose) and see if you would like it. I would also advise to get your hair cut with a hairdresser you already know, has done your hair before and most of all that you trust (him/her), otherwise you may be taking a big risk of not liking it. Are you looking to cut to fit in style-wise? think it'd be cute? or do you just want something lighter on your head/neck? Depending on the reasons will really depend on if you go all the way or just a bit by bit. I've found for me over the years when I wanted to be trendy I had more guts to just go all the way. But if I just wanted something more manageble, just a couple inches off was good enough. I like length, but dang... hair is heavy! imo, go mid shoulder with layers framing your face. if you don't like it that short, it's still long enough for a ponytail and curling to leave down

Get it done Professionally,first of all, or you might have regrets. I'd go to a Salon, and look at their catalogs, at which hair style would look best on you, while sitting in their chair, and looking in the mirror, with the magazine next to your head. Then, decide. My hair is now getting to my shoulders, and I can finally put pigtails in again. Anyways, it really depends on your facial structure. Do you have a oval or long face? Oval, then you should go with a layered look with long bangs. Long face, you should do a short hair cut like buzzed in the back slightly and longer towards the front.
